Set in natural surroundings, Sugarmill Woods is a lovely development of gentle hills and unspoiled woodlands situated in Florida’s “Nature Coast” on the west central part of the peninsula. Here you will find a quiet peaceful place where Florida’s past is still present.
Sugarmill Woods, originally a cattle farm with hundreds of acres of pasture land, was created in 1972 and was the first residential area in the United States to incorporate greenbelts (wildlife bands) in the planning of the community.
Located in a rural area, bordered on the west by the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge encompassing more than 31,000 acres consisting of portions of the Chassahowitzka River and the Homosassa Wildlife Management Area, itself of more than 5,000 acres.
And a little further to the east is the Citrus Wildlife Management Area that includes nearly 50,000 acres in Citrus and Hernando counties and the Withlacoochee State Forest which is another large wildlife resource in our region, presenting 157,000 total acres multi-use land and approximately 40,000 acres in Citrus County alone.
Fortunately, Citrus County is blessed with extensive public land holdings, which afford permanent protection for plants and animals. In all, more than 40% of the land including most of the pristine coast and vast areas of salt marsh and hardwood hammocks, that is set aside for public use.
Sugarmill Woods, which is adjacent to US Highway 19, just north of Homosassa Springs, is within minutes of the major cities of St. Petersburg, Tampa and just under an hour and a half to the attractions in Orlando.
Tampa International Airport is approximately 60 miles south. And Orlando International Airport is approximately 95 miles southeast. The Suncoast Parkway (State Road 589) has its current northern terminus at US 98 just a little bit south of Sugarmill Woods and leads south to Tampa.
Another popular destination for Sugarmill Woods residents is Ocala Florida which is just over 40 miles away.
However, Sugarmill Woods has modern amenities nearby and offers many shopping opportunities. The Shops of Sugarmill Woods borders the community and includes a Publix Grocery store, Subway sandwich shop, Verizon phones, GNC, investment counselor, a pool supply, pizza, drug store, and banking. Within a short drive are hospitals, medical facilities, more shopping and numerous dining choices.
