The Ozello Keys

The perfect getaway from the hectic day to day of city life starts on a westbound road that lies nearly equidistant between Homosassa and Crystal River.

The Ozello Keys, linked by a series of bridges, are the answer for those looking to leave the mundane and enjoy the pleasures of old Florida today.  Stretching for nearly ten miles from US 19 to the Gulf of Mexico, this eclectic community of artists, retirees and young families offers the tranquility only found off the beaten path along with all the amenities of waterfront living.

The Ozello Trail, as the road leading from US 19 is known, winds its way through piney woods, cedar groves and palm hammocks as it enters unspoiled marshes crisscrossed by the Salt River and innumerable creeks.  Superb fishing and unforgettable boating and kayaking adventures are daily experiences of its residents. This natural, unspoiled habitat supports a variety of wildlife from raccoons and wild hogs to box turtles; it is especially attractive to birders who enjoy the large variety of wading birds, ospreys and assorted waterfowl.

The history of the Ozello Keys is also remarkable.  Tales of treasure buried by 17th century pirates who plied these waters abound.  There are ruins where large salt kettles were in production during the Civil War.  Perhaps most notable is what became known as “ The Isle of Knowledge” a little 24’ x 30’ schoolhouse built in 1880 on an island in the middle of the St Martins River.  Local lore has it that families on the north side of the river would not agree to have the school located on the south side of the river and families on the south side would not agree to have the school located on the north side.  A compromise was reached and the island school, accessible only by water educated Ozello’s children from first to eighth grade until 1943.

According to national sporting publications, we are ranked as one of the top 12 best fishing spots in North America.  Aptly named “The Nature Coast,” this area of Florida is teeming with flora and fauna. The Nature Coast and the Ozello Keys have that special mixture of environmental ingredients which form the ideal foundations for an abundance of wildlife.

Whether you seek a permanent home or a home away from home on the Nature Coast, The Ozello Keys on Florida’s Nature Coast are worth your serious consideration.
